New Jewelry Class: Mixed Media Meets PMC: Turn Paper to Silver!

"Mixed Media Meets PMC(Precious Metal Clay)
Turn Paper to Silver!"
with Linda Kline
Saturday, February 27, 2010
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Cost $75

You won’t believe what you can do with a piece of paper and PMC!  This is a simple, introductory class that gives amazing results and you’ll leave this one-day class wearing a spectacular, one-of-kind fine silver abstract pendant.  Find out why Precious Metal Clay (PMC) has the art and jewelry community buzzing with excitement. PMC is a revolutionary, user-friendly jewelry-making medium comprised of micro particles of pure silver added to an organic binder that gives it a clay-like quality.  Today we feature the use of PMC3 paste (slip) to create our organic composition.  Learn to bezel set a gemstone and create a bail for hanging your design.   No prior jewelry making experience is required and the instructor supplies use of all tools.

Material Fee:  $55 (Payable to the instructor; includes PMC3 paste, shared use of PMC Syringe and adequate silver to create a bail.  The instructor will provide use of essential tools for the one-day class.  Optional gemstones, chains, earring wires, and additional silver may also be purchased from the instructor.)

About the Instructor:
Linda Kline is one of 18 senior PMC instructors in the U.S. Trained as a traditional metalsmith, she is widely published and recognized as a leading authority on PMC jewelry design.  On the faculty of Vero Beach Museum of Art since 2003, Linda has taught at conferences, arts facilities, and galleries throughout the U.S. and abroad, and appears on Jewelry Television in the instructional TV series, “Jewel School.”

New Workshop: Oil and Water DO Mix!

"Oil and Water DO Mix"
with Georgina Love
Saturday, February 20, 2010
10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
with lunch break
Cost: $40

In this workshop, our goal will be to bring a monochrome underpainting to near completion using acrylic paints and then finish in oil paints using a combination of glazing and direct painting methods.  This method is reminiscent of the traditional academic way of painting  but by using acrylics there is instant gratification!  The benefits, besides a more speedy painting, are working out composition and - most importantly - values in the painting using the acrylic paints so that when time comes for color, it's a fun painting experience instead of troublesome corrections.  Additionally, for painters who have problems with "mud", glazing and thin overpainting allows for more control of the paint.  This class is geared towards realism and subject matter will be a simple still life.

Materials List:

Participants need to bring a support, preferably  white canvas board or prepared masonite (white), 8 X 10 maximum (you may bring more than one support); if you have some favorite brushes and oil paints, bring them along.  Acrylic, oils and medium for glazing will be provided.

About the instructor:

Georgina Love’s initial training in oils was by an instructor classically trained in Florence. She enjoys still life painting and trompe l’oeil. She has exhibited locally and nationally, winning several awards. She enjoys learning about oil painting and loves to share what she knows with her students.

Artist's Statement:

I'm Georgina Love (but please call me George) and I'm an oil painter.   Ever since I saw "Death of Socrates", a painting by David, when I was 13, it has been my goal to paint in that style.  My initial training by an instructor who was classicaly trained in Florence.  He shared his knowledge and showed me what was needed to create paintings in the realistic style I so much admire.  So, for the past 15 years I've been practicing.   He also taught me not to be intimidated by subject matter, so I'll paint just about anything.  Still life is my favorite subject, however, in the past few years I have been working on perfecting the technique of trompe l'oeil painting.   To me, the more realistic, the better!  Though this requires magnifying glasses, brushes with two hairs and a lot of patience, I love it!   I have been commissioned for animal portraits - horses, dogs, cats and most recently am working on small landscapes.  There is a lot to share and learn about oil painting and I love to do that as well.  I am proud to say that my works have won awards from jurors and my peers and have been juried into local and national shows.

Floor cloths are flat canvas paintings designed to be walked on and used like throw rugs.  During this 4 day workshop participitants will design and paint their own floor cloths.  This workshop is for all levels of artistic ability.
Floor-cloths have been around for more than 200 years! “Floor-cloth” was a common term suggesting a carpet substitute, painted canvas, oilcloth or painted carpet. A painted floor-cloth is made of heavy canvas that had been stretched and sized, then troweled with oil paint and finished with block printing, stenciling, or hand painting.

For this workshop, "The only requirement", says Bonnie Phelan, the instructor, "is a desire to have fun."

Materials - All provided by instructor and included in price of class

About the Instructor:

Bonnie Phelan studied art with Mary Bullard in New York before moving to Florida 3 years ago. Once here, she delved into the historical art form of painting floor cloths which was a thriving industry in 18th century England. She has worked with local decorators in designing floor cloths for their clients.

If you happen to travel by the Villages of Longwood most afternoons, you might see Bonnie hard at work in her converted garage/artist studio. Or, if you frequent the Jazz Market for Fine Arts & Crafts, at the Community Center on North Indian River Drive on Saturday mornings, you will see Bonnie displaying some of her beautiful Floor-cloths.  You may also visit www.Floorclothdesign.com to see more examples of floor cloths.
